Noguchi Museum
Brand Identity / Type Design

“A museum is a repository against time, [...] a removal from time’s passage.” —Isamu Noguchi

Noguchi considered his museum to be an intentional hybrid space of changing and supposedly unchanging things. Unlike other conventional museums, he flexibly connected the outdoors and indoors through a garden environment, involving nature and the changing seasons. As people walk through it, the sunlight changes, and the shadow moves. The new identity of the Nougchi Museum focuses on Noguchi’s attempts to capture the passage of time within the museum space. Including the custom typeface, the overall system speaks to an experience of the presence of time.

40th Anniversary Campaign

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Noguchi Museum, I designed a special exhibition around Noguchi’s playscapes. Noguchi designed a number of public spaces/playgrounds where people could physically and actively engage with art. The campaign offers his vision of considering play as a strategy for building community and stimulating creativity in the everyday.
