3 Events
Poster / Motion
This is a series of three motion posters of three different upcoming cultural events in NYC: “ASUNA: 100 Keyboards” at Brooklyn Academy of Music, “Mark Rothko: Sound Bath Meditation,” and “Agnes Martin: Music for Healing” at Pace Gallery. The given challenge was to develop a visual connection between the three different events. From the left:

Experimental Japanese sound artist ASUNA invites guests to a live music performance/exhibition featuring over 100 keyboards. I built a visual moiré pattern of sound interference to embody this site specific listening experience: the multiple sound waves on the same frequency are disseminated in multiple directions, and the complex interference and resonance in the space can reveal different sound beats and loops, making the guests to discover the experiences of new sounds.

Agnes Martin said: “It’s not about facts, it’s about feelings. It’s about remembering feelings and happiness. A definition of art is that it makes concrete our most subtle emotions. I think the highest form of art is music. It’s the most abstract of all art expressions.” Inspired by Martin’s quote, I used vibrant color chips of Martin’s paintings to create visual, musical, and emotional rhythm and abstraction. The poster is for the event “Agnes Martin: Music for Healing” at Pace Gallery.

The exhibition “Mark Rothko: Sound Bath Meditation” provides an opportunity to give a new meaning to ‘being inside his work’ as viewers close their eyes and lose any reference to the external world—absorbing and reflecting simultaneously. Based on the prompt of the exhibition, I created a serene scenery utilizing the visual elements and colors in his paintings.
